He was the son of Doña Margarita Navarro y Madrigal and of Don Hilario Sauza, the brother of Don Santiago Sauza y Delos Rios, the husband of Doña Ysabel Berenguer de Marquina y Sumulong, the only child of Doña Demetria Sumulong y Lindo and of Señor Felix Berenguer de Marquina y FitzGerald, the 55th Governor-General of the Philippines of Alicante, Spain and from The Royal.& Noble House of FitzGerald of Ireland.

He is known as the Father of Tequila. He was one of the earliest and longest lasing distillers of Tequila spirit. He was the founder of Sauza Tequila distillery in 1873.

He was successful enough that three years later, on 01 September 1873, he purchased the La Antigua Cruz distillery, the oldest registered tequila distillery founded in 1805 by Jose Maria Castañeda, from Don Felix Lopez for 5,000 pesos and renamed in La Perseverancia. He, the former employee of Cuervo had successfully founded Sauza Tequila and became Cuervo's great rivals.

In 1873, he was the first to export tequila to the United States of America when he crossed through the border at El Paso Del Norte carrying three casks and six jugs of his mezcal-tequila wine. This was the beginning of the export of market for tequila.

On 25 December 1884, he and his wife Doña Margarita Muro and family from hosted the 35th Las Familias Unidas or the annual family reunion of the Sauza family in the Philippines.
